About the Book
Pearl Johnson, getting on in years, falls in love. Due to a litany of heavy personal baggage of a doomed marriage, she has difficulty accepting that she has the right to enjoy herself, life, and the pursuit of happiness. Widower Bob Turner is clueless about what the future holds. For many years he was happily married and is dubious about a second relationship, fearing that it would only lead to disappointment. Buried in loneliness, he becomes heavily involved in volunteer work self-pity, and alcohol. This fascinating story of love and internal conflict takes place amid the wonderfully complex, yet beautiful, and sometimes tragic, life in Haiti. Guidance comes from unlikely friendships - a Vodoun shaman, a Catholic priest, and a Haitian engineer. Fate's intervention in the relationship is best capsulated by the Vodoun, who says, "God works in strange and mysterious ways." As with all of Jim's novels, Sins of Pearl is written to entertain. But this novel may disturb a few people. So be it.
